Welcome to the May/June Edition of the Carolina Breast Friends Newsletter!
As we welcome summer, we’re filled with gratitude for the incredible support that continues to fuel Carolina Breast Friends' mission.
This spring, our community came together in a big way for Wiggin’ Out 2026, raising more than $200,000 to support the free programs, services, and resources offered through The Pink House. From our dedicated Big Wigs and generous donors to every person who shared, cheered, and contributed, this remarkable achievement is a testament to the power of community and the impact we can make together.
You'll hear from Executive Director Lisa Dale-Levinson as she shares updates from The Pink House, highlights recent initiatives, and looks ahead to what’s next for Carolina Breast Friends. You'll also meet CBF mentors Linda and Lydia in our latest Mission Moments feature as they discuss the importance of culturally inclusive support and building connections across communities.
Along the way, we'll look back at recent gatherings and programs, share a practical wellness tip for cultivating calm and connection, and highlight opportunities to stay engaged with our community. And don't miss our newest Story of Strength, where Sandy Cannupp shares her inspiring journey of resilience and hope, honoring every victory along the way.
Thank you for being part of this community and for helping us continue to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone.

In the Spotlight: A message from our Executive Director
As the summer sun fills our days with warmth and possibility, The Pink House continues to shine as a place of comfort, connection, and hope for all those impacted by breast cancer. The momentum behind Carolina Breast Friends is rising as we expand culturally responsive programs and extend support beyond our walls, creating new pathways to healing, belonging, and empowerment through community.
In her latest message, Executive Director Lisa Dale-Levinson shares exciting updates on the growth of La Casa Rosada con Latinas, upcoming EmpowHER Day Retreats, preparations for Roaring in Pink 2026, the future launch of our Mobile Unit, and other initiatives designed to expand access to support for Survivors, Thrivers, Co-Survivors, and their families.

Mission Moments: Support Without Borders
CBF Mentors Linda and Lydia Share the Power of Connection Across Communities
For many individuals navigating a breast cancer diagnosis, language barriers, cultural differences, and fear can make it difficult to seek support or even know where to begin. In this month's Mission Moments, CBF mentors Linda and Lydia share how their own experiences have inspired them to help bridge those gaps for others.
Through mentorship, education, and culturally responsive support, they discuss the importance of helping individuals feel seen, understood, and empowered throughout their breast cancer journey. Their stories serve as a powerful reminder that no one should have to face breast cancer alone—and that connection, compassion, and community can transcend borders, languages, and backgrounds.

Recent happenings:
The past two months have been filled with meaningful opportunities for connection, reflection, learning, and celebration. Here’s a look at a few recent moments that brought our community together.
Queens University Survivor Storytelling Project
This spring, Survivors and Thrivers from our community partnered with students from Queens University to share their personal breast cancer journeys through storytelling. Through meaningful conversations and deep listening, students helped bring these experiences to life, creating powerful reminders of the strength, resilience, and hope found within every story. A tradition we continue to celebrate through the Story of Strength featured in each issue of Wings of Hope.

EmpowHER Spring Day Retreat: Rebuild Your Nest
With generous support from Todd DeGarmo, Survivors and Thrivers gathered for our spring EmpowHER Day Retreat focused on rebuilding a sense of safety, resilience, and self-compassion after cancer. Participants explored mindfulness practices, Qi Gong movement, and practical tools to support emotional wellness long after the retreat ended.

Kinky Boots Night with METsters
Through a generous legacy gift from Michelle Johnson, our METsters enjoyed a special evening attending Kinky Boots in her honor. The night celebrated Michelle’s love of live theater while creating space for joy, laughter, connection, and community among those living with metastatic breast cancer.

Brick & Bloom
On May 14, our community gathered to unveil 19 new tribute bricks in the Celebration of Life Healing Garden during this year’s Brick & Bloom event. The evening brought together Survivors, Thrivers, family members, and supporters to honor loved ones, celebrate milestones, and reflect on the lasting impact of every story.

Wellness Tip: Grounding Yourself in the Present Moment
As part of our mentor wellness training, Mentor Guide Lori shares a simple grounding exercise designed to calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and help bring us back to the present moment. While this technique is especially helpful for mentors preparing to support others, it can benefit anyone—including Survivors, Thrivers, caregivers, and loved ones looking to cultivate a greater sense of calm and connection.

Stories of Strength: Sandy Cannupp: Ringing Her Own Bell

At 37 years old, Sandy Cannupp was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer after advocating for herself when she knew something wasn't right. Four years later, she continues to thrive, managing her diagnosis with determination, faith, the support of her community, and an unwavering commitment to finding joy in everyday life.
Throughout her journey, Sandy has learned that strength isn't always found in major milestones—it can be found in the everyday victories. From advocating for her health and prioritizing her mental well-being to leaning on family, friends, and fellow Thrivers, Sandy has discovered countless reasons to celebrate progress, hope, and healing along the way.
Today, Sandy is helping break the stigma surrounding stage IV breast cancer by sharing her story and showing others that it is possible to live fully, find peace, and thrive. While those living with metastatic breast cancer may not get the traditional opportunity to "ring the bell," Sandy has created her own way of celebrating each victory—ringing her own bell after every positive treatment and clear scan.

Gratitude: Partnerships That Strengthen Our Mission
This June, in recognition of Men’s Health Month, we are especially grateful for the advocates, partners, and community members who help us broaden important conversations around breast cancer awareness and support.
Opportunities like our upcoming Lunch & Learn, The Other Side of Pink: Male Breast Cancer Awareness with Jake Messier, allow us to shine a light on often-overlooked experiences while expanding access to education, connection, and support. Through partnerships with individuals willing to share their stories, we can reach new audiences, challenge misconceptions, and foster greater understanding across our community.
Thank you to everyone who shares their story, lends their voice, and helps us continue building a more informed and compassionate community.
We invite you to join us for this meaningful conversation and help spread awareness that breast cancer can impact anyone.
