"Sitting with other Survivors gave me encouragement I had no idea was possible."
Having a mother and sister who had been diagnosed with breast cancer years ago, Imogene was aware of the increased chances of her own diagnosis. When she found a lump herself, she moved swiftly, was diagnosed in November 2021, and had a double mastectomy the following month.
Imogene grew up in Charlotte, so she was familiar with the area where the Pink House is located. When her sister was diagnosed 10 years ago, the house stood out to her a little bit more. But it was only upon her own breast cancer journey that she made an appointment to visit in February of this year. She walked away with a comfort bag, mastectomy pillow, inspiration jar, and a whole network of care and support. In addition, she was matched with a Survivor Mentor.
Since her first visit, Imogene has become a fixture at The Pink House, both in-person and virtually, participating in various classes and taking advantage of the free personalized sessions such as oncology massage. She shares, "CBF is very welcoming and supportive. The Transformative Writing class is my favorite activity. It's very therapeutic."
Not only has Imogene taken advantage of several services offered at CBF, she's also finding ways to get involved as a volunteer. In our search for members to fill the Silent Auction Committee for Pink Boots on the Lawn this October, Imogene readily volunteered.
"I love CBF's volunteers and their spirit of service. I have been involved in a couple of silent auctions in the past. I have a large network in Charlotte, so I feel this committee is a good fit because I will be able to collect a lot of donation items."
We are delighted that Imogene has found a community that uplifts her and at the same time has offered her a way to give back to our mission of serving others in the breast cancer community.
