Welcome to the May/June Edition of the Carolina Breast Friends Newsletter!

As we move into the heart of spring, we're reflecting on an April full of momentum, meaning, and community. From the powerful journeys shared through Wiggin’ Out, to healing retreats, educational workshops, and everyday moments of support at The Pink House—your impact has been felt in every corner of Carolina Breast Friends.

In this edition, you’ll hear from Survivors and Thrivers like Cathy, who is preparing to walk the Camino de Santiago with her sister as a tribute to living fully with metastatic breast cancer, and Imogene, whose experience as a Big Wig reminded her—and all of us—that healing begins when we share our truth.

You’ll also find wellness inspiration, highlights from our recent events, and a celebration of the incredible generosity and heart behind our mission.

Thank you for continuing to walk alongside us. We’re grateful for every story shared, every step taken, and every show of support. Together, we are Wings of Hope.

Cathy Stewart’s Camino Journey

When Cathy Stewart was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) in 2014, she began a journey filled with challenges, resilience, and purpose. In this special conversation, Lisa Dale, Executive Director of Carolina Breast Friends, speaks with Cathy and her sister Kim about their next chapter: a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

For Cathy, the Camino represents more than a physical challenge—it’s a spiritual and deeply personal journey of strength, reflection, and living fully. As she trains and prepares to walk over 70 miles through the Spanish countryside, she carries with her the hopes of those navigating MBC and the mission of the Charlotte METsters, a CBF support group for individuals living with metastatic breast cancer.

Imogene’s Big Wig Reflection

Imogene
Imogene

For Imogene, saying “yes” to becoming a Big Wig wasn’t just about fundraising—it was about honoring the journey she’s walked and giving back to the community that helped her heal.

A Survivor, mentor, and longtime volunteer at Carolina Breast Friends, Imogene embraced her pink wig and her platform during April’s Wiggin’ Out campaign with grace, gratitude, and bold purpose.

“Wearing that bright pink wig wasn’t just about fun—it was a bold reminder that our stories matter,” she shared. “It opened doors to conversations, tears, laughter, and connection.

”Throughout the campaign, Imogene used her voice to share her truth and remind others that healing is possible, that strength is found in community, and that hope lives at The Pink House.

“You are not alone. You can do a total turnaround—go from weeping to winning,” she said. “There is life, joy, and power waiting on the other side of diagnosis.”

Imogene’s story is a powerful reflection of what it means to thrive—and to lift others up in the process.

 Connection, Healing & Growth

This spring has been full of powerful moments at The Pink House and beyond. From healing retreats and thoughtful conversations to community walks and educational workshops, here’s a look at some of the experiences that have brought us together:

EmpowHER Day Retreat: A night of laughter, reflection, and sisterhood, where Survivors and Thrivers connected through fun conversation starters and heartfelt storytelling. The evening ended with a calming meditation session, reminding us of the strength in shared experiences.

Walking with My Breast Friend Returns: With the warm weather back, our Friday walks are too! This casual, community-centered activity is a great way to move, connect, and unwind together. Walks typically happen around lunchtime—and may be coming to a neighborhood near you soon!

La Casa Rosada: At a recent gathering of our Spanish-speaking program, attendees learned about NC MedAssist and the benefits of medical supplements for Survivors. Special thanks to Jacky Rodriguez and Karen Correa for their insight and support.

Just One Heart with Dr. Jonathan Fisher: Dr. Fisher, a Charlotte cardiologist and author, led a meaningful conversation on the connection between heart and mind—and how small moments of awareness can lead to greater resilience and joy. Attendees enjoyed a heart-centered discussion, lunch, and a special book signing.

Clearing Toxins for a Healthier You

When your body is working hard—whether through treatment or daily life—it's important to give it the tools to function at its best. This month’s wellness tip explores gentle ways to support your body’s natural detox systems and reduce the toxic load you may be carrying.

It’s not about a quick cleanse—it’s about sustainable habits that help you feel stronger, clearer, and more balanced.

A Collaboration with Queens University

A Conversation with Judith Norman as told by Lindsey Bernier and Jean-Paul Lepley.

Judith & her husband

When you meet Judith Norman, you’re struck not by her diagnosis—but by her joy, curiosity, and fierce commitment to living fully. At 77, Judith describes herself as lucky—not just to have aged gracefully, but to have aged at all. After learning that she carried a hereditary breast cancer mutation, Judith chose vigilant screening over preventive surgery… until one MRI changed everything.

Her treatment journey was physically and emotionally demanding, but she faced it with honesty, courage, and a deep sense of gratitude for the people who surrounded her with support. She now reflects on each day with wonder—rediscovering the beauty in everyday moments, reconnecting with strength through exercise and travel, and continuing to break the generational silence around illness.

Judith’s story is one of reclaiming health, rewriting family legacy, and redefining resilience at every age.

Gratitude: To Our Big Wigs, Thank You

From pink wigs to powerful conversations, fundraisers to feel-good fun—April was a celebration of courage, community, and compassion, all powered by our amazing Big Wigs.

To every Big Wig who said “yes” to this journey: thank you. Your energy, heart, and hustle brought awareness, connection, and critical funding to the mission of Carolina Breast Friends. You showed the world what it means to lift others up, and you did it in style.

Whether you hosted a dinner, danced in a wig, shared your story, or simply showed up—you helped make a difference for Survivors and Thrivers at every stage of their journey.

We’re so grateful—and we’re not done yet!

There’s still time to help us surpass our goal and continue offering free support programs through The Pink House all year long.
