Session Description:

Early detection and improved treatment has led to an increase in long-term breast cancer survivors. Because of this, more attention is being given to the chronic and long-term effects of treatment. One of these effects can be heart disease.

In this presentation, you will learn about:

  • Risk factors for heart disease, including (1) general, (2) cancer-related and (3) treatment-related risk factors.

  • Signs and symptoms of heart disease that you should report

  • Tests that help detect heart damage before symptoms appear

  • What you can do to optimize heart health and minimize long-term effects

About the Instructor: 
Samuel Zimmern, MD    
Survivorship Cardio-Oncology Clinic     

Dr. Zimmern is a Cardiologist with 33 years' experience at Atrium Health's Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute. He joined Levine Cancer Institute's Department of Supportive Oncology in 2017.

In his current practice, Dr. Zimmern evaluates cancer survivors for heart problems caused or worsened by cancer treatments, such as doxorubicin (Adriamycin), traztuzumab (Herceptin) or chest radiation. If abnormalities are detected, Dr. Zimmern works with patients to minimize their long-term effects.
