Session Description:

Reiki is a complementary, holistic healing practice that gently supports the body's natural ability to heal itself. Reiki's origins are Japanese and the word means "universal life force energy".  It's a simple method of light touch that is based on the Asian concept of Ki (Chi/Qi) or life energy. If you have ever experienced a Tai Chi class, Reiki is similar EXCEPT the participant is laying down in a restorative resting position.  Attention is given to the participants comfort and overall well being----physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

What You Can Expect:

A common Reiki session will last about 45 minutes. During that time the practitioner may discuss your goals or intentions of the session so that the practitioner can make any adjustments accordingly. The participant is usually laying on a massage table but treatments can also be given while the participant  is seated or even standing. The participant  remains fully clothed. The practitioner places her/his hands on or near the participant's body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet. Other, more specific positions may be used based on the participant's needs. Each position is held for three to ten minutes depending on how much Reiki the participant  needs at each position of the body.  At the conclusion of the session, the practitioner may discuss and note any changes that may have occurred during the session.

A Reiki session may feel like a wonderful "glowing" radiance that surrounds the participant and may include feelings of deep relaxation, peace, and well-being that promote healing.  Some participants may experience a warmth, a coolness, or even tingling/"buzzing" sensations particularly in or around an area of the body that could be experiencing a potential health issue.  Some participants become so relaxed that they may even doze off!

Benefits of Reiki:

Reiki energy allows muscles to relax and increases blood flow to treated areas in the body, which in turn quickens the healing process.

A research study at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut indicated that Reiki improved patient sleep by 86%, reduced pain by 78%,reduced nausea by 80%, and reduced anxiety by 90%.  In addition, nurses report that Reiki helps patients heal faster with less pain, reduced stress, and reduced negative side effects due to chemotherapy, radiation, and other medical procedures.  Reiki has also been reported to promote psychological healing as well including: the release of anger, fear, worry, sadness, and other unhealthy feelings. Feelings of confidence, tranquility, and self-worth have also been reported.

Practitioner Bio:

Barb Saul is a breast cancer survivor. Diagnosed back in November of 2011, she began her journey towards a more natural and organic lifestyle. Part of her healing journey was the discovery and the practice of Reiki.  Prior to her first chemotherapy treatment, Barb was offered a Reiki session at a local cancer support and wellness center.  After her session, Barb felt a profound sense of courage and strength which carried her through all of her treatments.  Once she completed her treatments, Barb was very eager to learn Reiki----first for self care and eventually to care for others.

In 2012-2013, Barb successfully obtained her certification in Reiki Levels I, II, III, and Master Practitioner/ Teacher and has shared her practice with Carolina Breast Friends in the past.  Barb has also volunteered at other wellness centers and  events including Drumstrong, Elements of Charlotte and the Living Well Cancer Resource Center.  Barb is currently studying to become a Medical Assistant at the Cabarrus College of Health Sciences. During her "Self Care" time you might find Barb working in her herb garden, reading/listening to a good book/podcast, hiking/camping in nature, and spending time with her family.
