History

Established in November 2003 by Kristy Adams-Ebel, CBF is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to uniting and helping women with breast cancer in all stages of survival. The organization centers around those who want to create a social and educational outlet for women united in a sisterhood of survival and hope.

Diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32, Kristy recognized that part of her ability to cope with the struggle she faced depended on communing with fellow survivors. She understood the importance of being in a positive setting where the focus was on healing, self exploration, and empowerment through knowledge. Until her death in 2006, Kristy's determination, selflessness, and humor remained as strong as ever. She was, and is, an inspiration to everyone at Carolina Breast Friends.

Kristy's positive attitude comes through in Kristy's Law:

  1. My Breast Cancer will from here on out be referred to as H.I. (Hooter Infiltration)
  2. In order to create a hostile living environment for H.I., I must be supplied with a steady diet of Starbursts, Malted Whoppers, and Grape Crush.
  3. When at a restaurant or drive through, all individuals will kindly place their order to be followed by "and a miracle for my friend". Sounds something like this..."Yes, I'll have a burger with cheese, no mayo, large fry, medium diet soda, and a miracle for my friend."
  4. Anytime H.I. or the C word is mentioned, the individual responsible will drop and give me twenty.
  5. Chemotherapy or Radiation Treatments will from here after be referred to as a P.E.M. (Personal Extreme Makeover).
  6. All of my requests - no matter how simple or extreme - will be granted immediately and with a smile. Followed by the words "your Majesty." Violation of this will result in indentured servitude for a period of one week.
  7. Contents of emails, cards, and conversations will be inspirational and/or comical. Any violation of this rule will result in individual termination of future contact and immediate destruction.
  8. Any and all hospital stays, MD visits, scans, test, etc. will from here on out be referred to as "Time Outs".
  9. All individuals choosing to live by this Law must color their hair pink, have my first initial shaved into the side of their head, get a tattoo of "She Rules" - or - wear a pink ribbon of some kind at all times.
  10. Individuals in agreement with this law must contact someone in a different state or country and ask them to place my H.I. Fight Team on their Prayer List.

"Thank you for being part of Carolina Breast Friends. Without you many sisters journey would be lonely. You are each extraordinary & I am a better person because of your friendships. I'll close by sharing one of my favorite quotes ~ 'I walk, I fall down, in the meantime I keep dancing.' " All my love, Kristy 2006

To all of Kristy's army here on Earth!

Kristy has begun her new life in Heaven with her perfect body to match her perfect soul. She left us Oct. 15, 2006. She left very peacefully and quietly, something she normally wasn't!! I am pleased to say she no longer has to battle H.I. (Hooter Infiltration) or any of its side effects. She can now smile like we all know without any hidden pain, fear or anger.

Kristy truly blessed everyone she contacted with her infectious positive attitude and love! Her manager said it best when he told me, "There are people that impress you, others that touch you, but few ever truly impact you. Kristy was one of those people!" I can say I experienced that impact over 12 years ago and have been in awe ever since while I watched her impact so many others. This is a sad day for us who are left to continue the Good Fight. It is also a joyous day because we know Kristy is up there making God smile and laugh along with all the angels and those that went before her. Mourn Kristy's passing, cry as you wish, but know that at her Celebration of Life service, it will be a CELEBRATION! Kristy wants it that way. That's why she only wants balloons and no flowers. She told me flowers were for funerals, not celebrations.

I am very fortunate to have been with Kristy as a husband for the last 11+ years. We were blessed with many things, but most of all true love. There will never be another women quite like Kristy and for that reason we must continue her legacy and make Carolina Breast Friends the best group EVER. I want to thank all of you for your never ending support, love and prayers. Kristy and I were able to keep our heads high and smile because of you and God.

I will end this by saying all of you continue to keep me strong and help me put one foot in front of the other. Kristy and I were truly blessed by her diagnosis of H.I. She shared with me just a couple of months prior to her diagnosis that she was searching for her "life's mission".... then H.I. hit. Soon afterwards it became apparent what her mission on Earth was, to impact and help as many people as possible who were going through their own H.I. diagnosis. Because of that we now have a family that has grown exponentially and reaches the far ends of the Earth. Because of H.I., I have been blessed with more love than I could ever imagine. Kristy took this dreaded disease and made something God could call beautiful.

It is as a butterfly's life... you began as a caterpillar, somewhat ugly and bound to the earth, then you go through a metamorphosis and become a beautiful and elegant butterfly that knows no boundaries.

All my love and thanks,
Chris Ebel
Kristy's loving, supportive husband for 11+ years
